Obama Administration To Schools: Stop Using Police to Enforce Rules [Huffington Post]

Several incidents from across the country have highlighted instances of excessive force and discriminatory policing practices by school resource officers, stoking debate about whether law enforcement officers are actually keeping schools safe. On Thursday, the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) announced that it will require local police agencies to follow new guidelines in order to receive federal funding for the hiring of school resource officers. The new guidelines recommend that school districts and police agencies establish formalized partnerships that delineate the role of police officers in school and use data to evaluate the effectiveness of existing partnerships. The guidelines also recommend training school resource officers on how to work with kids, as well as provide instruction on implicit bias and childhood development.
