“Isolation Devastates the Brain”: The Neuroscience of Solitary Confinement [Solitary Watch]

Last month as part of a two-day conference on solitary confinement hosted by the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, neuroscientists testified to the degenerative neurological effects of isolation. As part of the discussion, specialists noted that increased stress hormones from solitary confinement can rewire the brain’s hippocampus, changing prisoners’ space perception and directional positioning.
