Aurora, CO --- The National Association of Counsel for Children announced today that Dennis G. Goodwin has been hired as Colorado’s second Child Protection Ombudsman, succeeding Becky Miller Updike. Goodwin’s professional experience includes 34 years in law enforcement, including work as a child abuse investigator for the Lakewood Police Department and the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office in Golden. Goodwin currently serves as Chief of Police for Arapahoe Community College, and begins his tenure as Ombudsman on June 10.

"I’m honored to be entrusted with this critical responsibility to protect and serve Colorado’s children and families,” said Chief Goodwin. "I know that social workers, community leaders, law enforcement and the courts are working hard all across the state on the challenges of child welfare. We all want to do better, and I look forward to working together to make Colorado a better, safer place for children.”

The Office of the Colorado Child Protection Ombudsman, created by Colorado statute to bring transparency to the state’s child welfare system, is currently hosted by the National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC) under contract with the Colorado Department of Human Services. NACC is the national membership and advocacy organization for attorneys and other professionals who represent children in child welfare, juvenile justice and custody cases. With over 1,600 members covering all 50 states, NACC works to protect the rights and interests of children, and has provided evaluations, assessments and trainings to states across the country.

"Dennis Goodwin is a career public servant who has dedicated his professional life to public safety,” said NACC Executive Director Kendall Marlowe. "As an investigator and as a collaborator, he will bring an objective, impartial eye to the reform of Colorado’s child welfare system.”
