Trial Skills Training

The Rocky Mountain Child Advocacy Training Institute

NITA National Education Center

Louisville, CO

May 19-23, 2008

Traditional attorney trial skills are a critical, yet neglected piece of effective advocacy for children. Each spring, the NACC conducts The Rocky Mountain Child Advocacy Training Institute (RMCATI) in Denver, CO together with The Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA).

RMCATI is a 5-day intensive experiential training designed to provide child advocates with the trial skills necessary to handle dependency, delinquency, criminal and private custody cases.

The Institute is designed for all attorneys who work in children's cases, including children's attorneys (guardians ad litem, law guardians, etc.) state and agency attorneys, family law practitioners, prosecutors, and public defenders.

Skill areas covered include:

  • Case Analysis
  • Direct Examination
  • Cross Examination
  • Expert Witnesses
  • Problem Witnesses
  • Evidentiary Foundations
  • Introduction and Use of Exhibits
  • Impeachment and Refreshing Recollection
  • Making and Meeting Objections
  • Ethics and Professionalism
