NACC Certification Exam Details

Before you can become a Certified Child Welfare Law Specialist, you must pass the NACC Certification Exam. NACC Certification Exams are locally proctored at testing centers, libraries, and other locations. You can schedule an exam during the exam season (typically January through November) once your completed application has been approved by the NACC Certification Committee and all fees have been paid.

The Exam

Exam questions are drawn from Child Welfare Law and Practice, Representing Children, Parents and State Agencies in Abuse, Neglect and Dependency Cases (Bradford, 2nd Ed., 2010), also known as “The Red Book.” Lawyers certified in child welfare must be knowledgeable in relevant state and federal laws; understand principles of child development, family dynamics, and psychology; be familiar with collateral systems impacting children and their parents; and recognize the professional responsibility and ethical issues that arise out of child welfare proceedings.

The NACC Certification Exam is open notes (hard copy only). You may not bring Child Welfare Law and Practice (aka the Red Book) or photocopies of the Red Book to the exam. All other publications are allowed.

California examinees must sit for both the National Exam and the California Exam, and may wish to bring Seiser & Kumli, the Dogbook, and the California Code.
