Happy New Year from NACC

A new year, a fresh start.  I remember the old days of cracking open a brand-new paper calendar -  its blank pages so inviting and bright with optimism and opportunity!  But now, for many, our calendars are already six-months deep or more into 2018 with scheduled court hearings, appointments, and meetings.  Yet, every year (and indeed every month and day), an opportunity presents itself for each of us to try something new.  Whether it’s a novel legal strategy or technique, a renewed commitment to client-centered representation, or a pressing policy reform effort—a new year presents opportunities for us to challenge ourselves and grow.

At NACC, our multi-state team will gather in Colorado next week to kick off the new year together and finalize our work plan for 2018.  We’ve already begun implementing some of your recommendations from last year’s survey by continuing to offer a reduced membership rate, as well as a significantly reduced price to become a Child Welfare Law Specialist by restructuring some features of the CWLS program and administration.  At the same time, we plan to continue strengthening our support of your work with law and policy updates and online learning opportunities.  2018 is a great year to join NACC or upgrade your membership, achieve the CWLS credential, and of course—join us in San Antonio!

At NACC, your practice is our purpose.  Recognizing that the work you do is difficult and, on some days, seemingly impossible, know that NACC is here to support and assist you in your continuing efforts to secure the best outcomes for your clients.  Members can tap into NACC’s national community through our list-serv and member directory, as well as make specific resource requests to our legal team.  We also recognize political and policy changes will continue to affect our clients and our practices in 2018 and beyond.  As you work in your jurisdictions to address those challenges, know that NACC is also engaged –to assist you on a local level and to mobilize our collective voice on a national level.

Last but not least, NACC is excited to embark on developing a new strategic plan for the future.  We are excited for the opportunity to stand on the shoulders of our 40-year history and chart the next course of NACC’s legal and policy advocacy.  We thank you for your participation in our survey last summer and will seek additional insights and recommendations from you in the year ahead.  Our doors and ears are always open to your ideas and comments, so please feel free to email me at  Thank you for the work you do every day for children and families.  Happy 2018!
