Religious Freedom Doesn’t Protect Child Abuse [The Atlantic]

Last winter, Kin Par Thaing, a Burmese woman living in Indiana, was arrested on charges that she beat her 7-year-old son with a coat hander, leaving 36 bruises. In July, she submitted a briefing that argued Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act protects her right to punish her children as she sees fit. It is unlikely that her argument will succeed in court, but the ruling could have implications on how Americans perceive similar arguments in the future.
