Kalief Browder Learned How to Commit Suicide on Rikers [The New Yorker]

In this week’s post, regular contributor and NACC Board Member Candi Mayes shares some breathing exercises to help child welfare attorneys and other child welfare professionals manage stress.In 2010, at the age of 16, Kalief Browder was arrested for robbery. He spent the next three years in jail trying to prove his innocence. Roughly two of those years were spent in solitary confinement, where he attempted suicide several times. The charges against Kalief Browder were eventually dropped and he was released. However, two years after his release, on June 6, 2015, Kalief took his own life in his home in the Bronx. Depositions obtained as part of a lawsuit that Browder field against the city offer new information – specifically, that it was in Rikers where Browder learned how to kill himself.
