The 2008 Child Advocacy Training Institute is a special educational experience for lawyers representing the interests of children. The National Institute for Trial Advocacy, The National Association of Counsel for Children, and The Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center continue their collaborative effort in this exceptional learning-by-doing training program. The course is designed to meet the specialized needs of lawyers who practice in the areas of child and family law, including private practitioners, prosecutors, guardians ad litem, appointed respondent parent’s counsel, and public defenders.
Enter into a simulated trial environment where you hone skills most often used in cases involving children. Following your performances our experienced and distinguished faculty members will provide constructive feedback and targeted suggestions to enable you to further enhance your skills and become more effective. We’ll record your performances giving you the opportunity to review your technique with instructors, who offer one-on-one feedback to help you improve voice, gestures, use of notes, and non-verbal behaviors. Heavy emphasis is placed on case analysis and how to tell your client’s story in the most effective and compelling way.
Each segment of the program focuses on a different set of trial skills. Using a building block approach, the program’s first focus is on mastering case analysis and planning, then questioning techniques for direct and cross-examination, foundations for testimony, exhibits, refreshing memory, and impeachment by prior inconsistent statement, using exhibits with testimony, witness control, and examining expert witnesses. The program’s five days are equivalent to taking several cases to trial.
